🦟 Mosquito Warning Issued This Week — Here's How to Protect Your Family
After weeks of rain in Mt. Juliet, standing water is everywhere — and mosquitoes couldn't be happier about it. The timing matters too: the Tennessee Department of Health issued an advisory just this week urging residents across the state to take simple but important precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses. Consider this your local reminder to take it seriously.
Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, and the entire life cycle from egg to adult can happen in as little as a week — which means right now is prime time to get ahead of the problem before your backyard becomes unbearable.
Start in your own yard:
Walk your property and empty anything holding water — buckets, flower pot saucers, bird baths, kids' toys, clogged gutters, and tarps. Even shaded, damp areas like patios, porches, and dense landscaping give mosquitoes a place to rest during the day, so keeping your lawn trimmed makes a real difference too.
Protect yourself and your family:
The Tennessee Department of Health recommends EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET or picaridin, and wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors. Clothing and gear can also be treated with permethrin for added protection — just don't apply it directly to skin.
Why it matters:
While most mosquito bites result in minor irritation, some can carry diseases like West Nile virus — and for many mosquito-borne illnesses, there are no vaccines or specific treatments, making prevention the most important step.
A little effort now goes a long way toward enjoying the rest of summer without the swatting. 🌿
